frequently asked questions
What sort of websites and applications do you build?
Most of the websites and applications I have built
are business oriented and involve e-commerce in some
way, whether selling products to consumers online or
business-to-business. I occasionally also build
"brochure" style smaller websites for start-ups, and
membership/community based websites.
Can you provide me with a quote to build a website or an application?
Yes, I'd be happy to. Please use the
contact form in the first instance to briefly describe what you're looking for and I'll get back to you. You may find the "How Do I set up a website?" guide useful - this provides a checklist of all the items you'll need to think about for your project and I'll refer to some of those aspects if you ask me for an estimate or to build your project for you. Even if you intend to build your own website, you'll find it handy.
Are you available?
My availability varies - I am generally fully booked for a period of weeks ahead, but smaller projects might be able to be accomodated quickly. The earlier you let me know your interest the earlier I can get back to you and provisionally book the time for your project if you elect to proceed.
Do you charge for quotations?
I do not charge to supply a "ballpark" quotation. Generally estimates are free of charge however should your project involve integrating with existing systems or be particularly complex in terms of business processes, or you're looking for a more consultative approach, I can arrange to spend some chargeable time with you to produce a collaborative specification document.
How much does it cost?
Until I know what you're looking for, I can't say :-) However it's worth noting that I will not normally take on a new project with a value of less than £1,500 (though I will make changes and enhancements to existing projects for current clients on a time-as-used basis).
Smaller items of work are charged at an hourly rate. Larger projects are generally quoted as a complete project, either as an estimate or where possible a fixed-price quotation. The basis for my billing is time used - whether that's writing code, discussing your application with you on the telephone to supply consulting, visiting you and so forth. For projects I normally request that you pay 50% of the total at the commencement of the project with the balance on completion.
Are there any discounts available?
I provide a settlement discount for all invoices
paid via BACS/faster payment which arrive on or before
the due date of the invoice. I also provide discounts
for charities and voluntary organisations in certain
fields - please ask.
My developer has disappeared - help! Can you take on an existing website or application?
Yes, usually. However my experience and focus is on Microsoft based solutions, so I won't be able to help very much if your website is written in PHP running on an Apache web server using MySql. However should you desire, I can re-code an existing application which is normally a good time to look at how well your current solution meets your needs and what you would like to take forward into the new application.
Does your work come with any kind of support or guarantees?
Yes. All work is guaranteed to be free of defects for life. Any rectification work which is directly related to a problem with the code of the original application as supplied to you is fixed free of charge. This is subject to some Terms and Conditions which I'll be happy to discuss with you.
Ongoing support and training for your application - if it is complex - can be provided either on a time-used billing basis or via a formal support contract which also provides a Service Level Agreement.
Can you supply references?
Happy to - just ask.
Can you come and work on my premises?
All my work is performed at my own office, though I normally like to meet all new clients face-to-face and occasional site visits are often necessary during a large or complex project.
